Lot 22 Newfoundland #1 1d Brown Violet Crown & Heraldic Flowers, 1857-1860 First Pence Issue, A Good Used Single With Clear Vertical Mesh, Dry Printing, 22 x 22.5 mm, Expertly Repaired

A good used single of the 1d brown violet Crown & Heraldic Flowers from the 1857-1860 First Pence Issue with clear vertical mesh, dry printing, 22 x 22.5 mm, expertly repaired. This stamp at one time was torn in half around the W or "Newfoundland" and "E" of "One". The two halves were expertly re-joined, with additional paper pulp that was smoothed along the resultant seam. It was well done: there is no obvious seam visible on the front of the stamp, but the repair does lower the grade significantly, from fine to good.

Unitrade values this at $180 for fine. Our estimate of the value for the condition offered is $45. The stamp offered here grades 50 as follows:

Centering/Margins: 30/60

Paper Freshness: 5/5

Colour: 10/10

Impression: 10/10

Absence of Visible Paper Flaws: 5/5

Perforations:

Cancellation: 10/10

Adjustment for mentioned faults: -20 points.
