Lot 420 Canada #291var 3c Deep Rose Purple King George VI, 1949-1952 Postes-Postage Issue, A VFNH LR Plate Block Plate 1, With Pre-Plate Glazing Crease in The Selvedge At LR Corner
A VFNH LR plate block of the 3c deep rose purple King George VI from the 1949-1952 Postes-Postage Issue plate 1, with pre-plate glazing crease in the selvedge at lr corner. This is an Interesting minor foldover error that occurred after the sheet was gummed, as the corner fold is gummed, but on the front of the block you can see an impression where the folded piece meets the rest of the selvedge. When it is folded back out into its normal position, it reveals that the paper is actually a lot thinner and unsurfaced in the tiny corner piece that was folded over, and that during manufacture, an additional layer of pulp is added, and the surface is glazed smooth. Because the little corner piece was covering a small section on the selvedge, the part that was covered did not receive this additional layer, which is why there is an impression where the folded piece meets the remainder of the selvedge. So, it would appear that this foldover occurred during the paper manufacturing process, and not during printing, and it provides a piece of compelling evidence that the paper was gummed before printing, and not after. An interesting piece that helps tell the exact story of how the stamps were printed.
Unitrade values this at $2.5 for a normal plate block. Our estimate of the value for the foldover is $10. The block offered here grades 80 as follows:
