The Pence Issue Papers - 1851-1858

Type Code Characteristics Values Seen On
Pence-A Horizontal laid paper, having laid lines which are barely visible, even in watermark fluid. This paper is semi-porous on the felt side and highly porous on the wire side. This paper is nearly transparent. These characteristics are key to distinguishing the laid paper from the thinner wove paper, found on #4d's. This paper does show very fine vertical mesh, when held up to backlight, so it may not be a true laid paper, even though collectors throughout the hobby refer to it as such. 3d, 6d, 12d
Pence-B Soft, opaque vertical wove, with no visible mesh unless held up to backlight, when coarse mesh is barely visible. The felt side is semi-porous and the wire side is highly porous. 6d
Pence-C Thin, transparent vertical wove paper that shows no mesh, even in backlight. The felt side is non-porous and the wire side is semi-porous and smooth. The design is fully visible through the back of this paper.  10d
