Lot 7 New Brunswick #4 1/- Dull Violet Flowers, 1851 Pence Issue, A Fair Used Single, More Than Acceptable Space Filler, With What I Consider to Be An Overly Harsh 2001 PF Certificate With What I Assume To Be 2 Incorrect Assertions

A fair used single of the 1/- dull violet Flowers from the 1851 Pence Issue, more than acceptable space filler, with what I consider to be an overly harsh 2001 PF certificate which contains 2 incorrect assertions.

The two incorrect assertions are; 1)The stamp is rebacked and 2) the blue Chatham #8 grid cancels arefradulent. With regard to the first assertion, there is no sign of rebacking; the violet color shows through on the back, as on the other values of this issue and the paper shows the usual softness & fiberous nature that normally makes it so susceptible to tearing. There is some brownish discoloration from the glue that was applied to seal the large vertical tear that is present through the lower emblems. All 4 margins are fully clear of the design, though they are all exremely close. The cancellations look exactly as the other numeral grids I have seen on this issue and #8 for Chatham is known in blue and is actually more common than black.

Unitrade values this at $5000 for fine. Our estimate of the value in this condition is $1,250. The stamp offered here grades 35 as follows:

Centering/Margins: 20/60

Paper Freshness: 0/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of Visible Paper Flaws: 5/5

Perforations: 10/10

Cancellation: 10/10

Adjustment for mentioned faults: -20 points.
