Lot 309 Transvaal (C) SG#134a 1d Brown Red, 1878 Queen Victoria Sideface Issue Used With SON #25 Cancel for Zeerust, Scarce

A VG used single of the 1d brown red from the 1878 issue with Zeerust #25 3-ring cancel. The stamp is a top sheet margin single with a natural straight edge and has a small wrinkle in the upper left corner that may come out with a good soak and press. This is one of the scarcer cancels of the period, having a value of $3-$15 depending on what stamp it is on and the clarity of the strike. This is a very clear strike on a moderately priced stamp, but the condition of the underlying stamp is just VG.

Gibbons values the basic stamp at 7 GBP. Based on this, the condition  and the scarcity of the cancel, we estimate the value at $5.   The stamp offered here grades 60 as follows:

Centering/Margins: 30/60

Paper Freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of Visible Paper Flaws: 5/5

Perforations: 10/10

Cancellation: 10/10

Adjustment for above mentioned faults: -10 points
